Originally trained in the visual arts with an emphasis on Iconography, Worthy came to her Ph.D. in literature via the completion of coursework and comprehensive exams for a Ph.D. in Comparative Arts/Humanities (Interdisciplinary Arts). Her English dissertation focused on the figure and tradition of Mary Magdalen in the Medieval play ā€œThe Digby Mary Magdalenā€ and Shakespeareā€™s late play, ā€œPericles, Prince of Tyre.ā€
