We are pleased to announce the appointment of Miriam Intrator to the position of the Head of Archives & Special Collections and Rare Book Librarian, effective February 1, 2025.

This new role was developed to provide additional support for the teaching, learning and outreach mission of the Libraries’ Mahn Center for Archives & Special Collections, Preservation and Digital Initiatives department.

The staff reporting to her will be Mahn Center’s archivists, including the University Archivist and Records Manager, the Photo Archivist and the Manuscripts Archivist. Intrator will also continue to work closely with her colleagues in Digital Initiatives and Preservation and will be integral to developing the department’s overall strategic direction.

In this new role, she will lead the Libraries’ initiatives to integrate special collections into OHIO’s teaching, learning and research; collaborate with colleagues, students, faculty and researchers to develop the scholarly use of OHIO’s special collections globally; and to foster innovative experiential learning opportunities. As a department head in University Libraries, she will develop a strategic vision for Archives & Special Collections in harmony with the Libraries’ strategic planning process.

Intrator also served as the former Interim Head of Archives & Special Collections and Digital Initiatives from September 2023 through December 2024. In this role, she provided leadership and guidance on all matters related to the department’s daily work, which includes, but is not limited to, outreach, instruction, programming, collection development and management, donor relations and fostering collaborations across the Libraries, the campus and the community.

During this time, she also led the ongoing reimagining of the Archives & Special Collections’ reading room and reference desk space and experimented with different ways to more successfully engage and serve students, researchers and other users.

As of January 1, 2025, Intrator has returned as the Mahn Center’s Special Collections Librarian with a focus on rare books, a position she has held since 2013. In this role, she has been responsible for managing all aspects of the Rare Book Collection. In addition, she has been integral to coordinating and increasing outreach to faculty and students, furthering curricular integration of archives and special collections.

Throughout her career at OHIO, she has successfully built and maintained a busy instruction program focused on primary source literacy. Through her intensive outreach efforts, she has built inroads and developed deep relationships with students, faculty, staff and researchers across a broad range of departments and disciplines both within OHIO and beyond. We are excited to formally incorporate this success into her portfolio as well as the Libraries’ strategic vision.

Intrator earned a MLIS from UNC in 2003, a Ph.D. in History from CUNY in 2013 and a Rare Book School Certificate of General Proficiency in 2017.
