Learning Communities seek student leaders

Interested in helping first-year students adapt to life at OHIO? Apply to be a Learning Community Leader (LCL).

Learning Communities (LC) create learning-based peer networks by enrolling groups of up to 25 students in sets of thematically linked courses. LCLs work with their LC instructor to lead a weekly core course with a LC group, plan outside activities, and hold study sessions while earning $8.80 an hour for up to 10 hours a week.

Learning Community Leader Rachel Zelinsky encourages other students to apply to serve as LCLs.

ā€œThe most rewarding part of being a Learning Community Leader has been watching my students grow into who they want to be, while finding their future career paths,ā€ said Zelinsky. ā€œAs an LCL, I have had the opportunity to pass on knowledge and experience I have gained as an upperclassman. I have guided first-year students with their adjustments to being in college and away from home for the first time.ā€

This year the application cycle has begun earlier in the year and applications to become a Learning Community Leader are now being accepted. The deadline to apply is Monday, Feb. 3. Faculty and staff may nominate students to LC positions by completing the nomination form at .

ā€œLearning Community Leaders play an important role in helping first-year and transfer students with a successful transition to college life,ā€ said Director of Learning Community Programs Kris Kumfer. ā€œLCLs help inform and engage new students both in and outside the classroom as they build connections at 51ĀŅĀ× and in the greater community.ā€
