
Bridging the digital divide: 51ĀŅĀ× Eastern empowers communities with 5G Readiness Certification

Starting Jan. 13, 2025, will empower individuals to step into the future of telecommunications with its 5G Readiness Certification program.
This groundbreaking initiative, offered at no cost to participants, combines online learning and hands-on training to prepare community members for high-demand careers in the rapidly growing 5G industry.
Developed in collaboration with the and the Lt. Governorās Office of Workforce Transformation, the program underscores ās dedication to bridging the digital divide and advancing workforce development in underserved areas.
"We are excited to offer the 5G Readiness Certification, a free program available to both 51ĀŅĀ× students and community members through the McClure School of Emerging Communication Technologies, in partnership with the Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA). This initiative reflects 51ĀŅĀ×ās commitment to equipping individuals with the essential skills needed to succeed in the rapidly growing telecommunications industry," said David Rohall, dean of campus and community relations at 51ĀŅĀ× Eastern.
The certification program addresses a critical challenge faced by many rural communities: limited broadband infrastructure and the economic and educational barriers it creates. By equipping local residents with skills in wireless infrastructure, 5G ecosystems, and fiber optics, 51ĀŅĀ× Eastern is empowering individuals to fill workforce shortages while creating pathways to economic mobility.
The programās origins lie in 51ĀŅĀ×ās recognition of the challenges faced by rural and regional communities, where limited broadband infrastructure has hindered both economic growth and educational opportunities. By equipping local residents with the skills needed to support the rollout of 5G and broadband technologies, the University is addressing workforce shortages while empowering individuals to seize high-demand job opportunities.
The upcoming Spring 2025 cohort, hosted at 51ĀŅĀ× Eastern, reflects the Universityās targeted efforts to serve regional populations. Starting Jan. 13, 2025, this cohort will explore essential topics such as wireless infrastructure, 5G ecosystems, and fiber optics, culminating in a certification that can serve as a gateway to employment in the telecommunications industry. The hands-on training will take place locally, further cementing the programās accessibility for eastern Ohio residents.
