Non-traditional student Crystal May embraces new opportunities at OHIO Eastern

Returning to college after years away from the classroom can be a daunting decision, but for Crystal May, it was an opportunity she couldnā€™t pass up. As a non-traditional student working to earn a bachelor of science in business at , May is proving that itā€™s never too late to achieve your goals.

Mayā€™s journey began in the banking industry, where she worked for JP Morgan Chase before stepping away to become a stay-at-home mom. Dedicated to her childrenā€™s education, she not only homeschooled them but also founded a nonprofit organization to support homeschooling families throughout the tri-state area. Despite her professional experience and leadership skills, one goal remained unfinishedā€”earning her degree.

ā€œIt has always been a goal of mine to return to college and finish my degree, and now seemed like the perfect time,ā€ May said.

Her decision to transfer to 51ĀŅĀ× Eastern was influenced by an unexpected sourceā€”her daughter, Grace, a nursing student at the university. After attending Graceā€™s advising sessions, May was impressed by the facultyā€™s dedication and the opportunities available at OHIO Eastern. When the university she had been attending closed, transferring to 51ĀŅĀ× Eastern felt like the ideal choice.

ā€œWith the added blessing of attending college with my daughter, I knew it was the right decision,ā€ she said.

Balancing school, family, and personal commitments was a challenge, but May credits her familyā€™s unwavering support for making the transition possible.

ā€œAs a busy wife and mother, deciding to go back to school was a big decision,ā€ she admitted. ā€œBut as a family, we are very supportive of each otherā€™s goals. With everyone stepping up to help out at home, I felt comfortable pursuing my education.ā€

Sharing the college experience with her daughter has been an unexpected joy. The two encourage each other, study together, and even find time to catch up between classes.

ā€œVery few people have the opportunity to attend college with their children,ā€ May said. ā€œIt truly is an amazing experience.ā€

May encourages other non-traditional students to take the leap and return to school.

ā€œIf you have a goal, pursue it! Donā€™t let age, circumstances, or othersā€™ opinions impact your aspirations. Give your best in all that you do!ā€ she advised.

Looking ahead, May is excited about the career opportunities that her business degree will unlock. She hopes to pursue a position in business or human resources, possibly returning to the banking industry. With the resources available through the College of Business, Handshake, LinkedIn, and 51ĀŅĀ× Easternā€™s career coaching services, she feels well-prepared for the next chapter of her professional journey.

51ĀŅĀ× Eastern offers flexible programs and personalized support, making higher education attainable for students of all backgrounds. Mayā€™s story serves as an inspiration to others who may be considering a return to college, proving that with determination and support, anything is possible.
